Rediscovering the forgotten history of Polish Scots

It is estimated that in the 17th century there were 800-30,000 Scottish families living in Poland.

Many of them shaped the history of Poland giving birth to politicians, academics, poets or military leaders.

Few of their modern-day Polish descendants are aware of their Scottish roots. Even fewer Scots know about their long-lost Polish cousins.

Let's rediscover the history of Polish Scots together.

REDISCOVERING LOST HERITAGE

Multidisciplinary approach
to rediscovering forgotten history of Polish Scots

Although Scots first arrived in Poland centuries ago this chapter in the Polish history is rarely taught in Polish or Scottish schools. Modern-day descendants of Scottish immigrants are usually unaware of their origins, just like modern-day Scots tend to be surprised that their family members settled in Poland such a long time ago.
Until recently most research has focussed on the documentary evidence of Scottish presence in Poland with few attempts to trace the genealogies of Scottish settlers beyond the immediate generations. Thanks to the rapidly growing popularity of DNA testing as well as easier access to historical records, the history of Scottish-Polish relations can be rediscovered with a greater focus on individual family histories, rather than a more collective approach.

ABOUT ME

From Scotland to Poland and back to Scotland

Since moving to Edinburgh to pursue research in human genetics I have irreversibly fallen in love with Scotland. Learning about her rich history, inspiring inventors and great thinkers, exploring lochs and hills and meeting so many wonderful Scottish people has made a lasting impact on me - both professionally and personally.

Originally from Poland (albeit with a tiny drop of Caledonian blood!), I have always been fascinated by the multiethnic past of my native homeland. The more I read about the historic links between our two nations the more I realised our shared history deserves to be more widely known. Combining my professional background in genetics and genealogy with my love for Poland and Scotland seemed like the perfect way to make that happen!
